Description

FromĀ Alan Bullard Joining The Dots Piano Book 5 offers pianists lots of material to help build confidence and skill in sight-reading. The series brings together a range of activities to help students improve their sense of keyboard geography, helping them to read new music more quickly and easily.

The five books cover the requirements for ABRSM’s sight-reading tests at each of Grades 1 to 5, and include:

  • many short, characterful pieces to sight-read, in a range of approachable musical styles
  • warm-up and technical exercises, to establish basic hand shapes and finger patterns within each key
  • simple improvisation exercises in which students can explore musical ideas and familiarize themselves further with the ‘feel’ of each key
  • longer solo pieces and a duet, for additional sight-reading practice or to learn quickly and play through for fun

As a composer of choral music, Iā€™ve worked with many choral singers, and as a teacher, I have taught sight-singing and general musicianship for many years ā€“ and there is no doubt that quick and efficient sight-singing saves a great deal of time in choral rehearsals, and also helps instrumentalists to internalize the music they are playing ā€“ thus, in both cases, achieving more efficient learning and more time to develop the musical details and performance skills…..Alan Bullard

The Alan Bullard Joining The Dots Piano Book 5 is part of the Joining the Dots series which now contains books for piano, violin, and guitar, as well as a series of sight-singing books.

About ABRSM:

ABRSM is the UKā€™s largest music education body, one of its largest music publishers and the worldā€™s leading provider of music exams, holding over 650,000 assessments in more than 90 countries every year. As a registered charity, we also make significant donations towards music education initiatives around the world.

Founded in 1889, we have a long history but our mission hasĀ stayed the same: to nurture a love for music, and toĀ inspire achievement in it. At ABRSM, we believe that everyone, wherever theyā€™re from, should have access to high-quality music-learning.

Our partnership work is never one-off ā€“ we build long-lasting relationships and support ongoing projects. We advocate for music, playing our part to ensure the future of music education and its place in society. Working towards this goal forĀ over a century means that weā€™re a trusted voice at a boardroom table as well as on a concert stage.

Led by our governing body our staff members, examiners and volunteers work with passion and dedication to make learning music what it should always be: a joyous and life-enriching experience.

Graded music exams provide a structured framework for progression from beginner to advanced musician.Ā Most subjects are offered from Grades 1ā€“8 and have three standards of pass: a straight pass, a pass with merit and a pass with distinction. Candidates may enter any Practical or Music Theory exam grade without having taken any other, though there is a requirement to have passed Grade 5 Theory or Grade 5 Practical Musicianship or Grade 5 in a solo Jazz subject before Grade 6ā€“8 Practical exams can be taken.

More than 600,000 candidates take ABRSM exams each year in over 93 countries. ABRSM also provides a publishing house for music which produces syllabus booklets, sheet music and exam papers and runs professional development courses and seminars for teachers.
